Another week, another Manchester band to bring to you attention in one of my new music posts. I’m not sure what is happening up in Manchester but there really has been an insane amount of talent out of there already this year. This week, it’s female quartet PINS with their throwback fuzzy, echoing tracks and 70’s art rock inspired style. I really do love these girls and their sound so make sure you check them out below.
Above is their single ‘LUVU4LYF’ which features a strong drum beat, echoing vocals and chugging distorted guitars. With such a strong backing to their tracks, the high pitched backing ‘oh’s’ add a bit of light to the shade so to speak. The chorus is a fast paced affair with quick riffs and fast vocals featuring the lyrics “I will die for you and I’ll love you for life.” Meanwhile, single ‘Get With Me’ featured below is less dense and atmosphere laden but still retaining the rock edge with chugging bass, catchy guitar melodies, pounding drums, crashing cymbals and languid vocal style that echoes around the track. This one has a faster tempo to it and I’m sure it is the one that will get the crowds dancing.
Starting out back in 2011, Faith, Anna, Lois and Sophie started out with PINS and since then they have caught the attention and imagination of many. Their debut single ‘Eleventh Hour’ caught the attention of The Guardian’s new music slot back in April 2012, back then they said that they reminded them of bands that had been featured a lot back in 2008 and 2009 with The Guardian saying that; “They’re the most Brooklyn band ever to come from Manchester.”
Since then the band have progressed but remained honest about their influences throughout their sound with the dreamlike vocals, fuzzy reverb guitar and strong echoing drums still big features in their tracks. The band are now signed to Bella Union music and after releasing their debut album ‘Girls Like Us’ last year, it seems that the focus now is on playing shows promoting the album. So understandably, the band are touring a lot especially around the UK supporting bands, playing their own headline sets and also making appearances at a lot of the summer’s many festivals.
One of those festivals will be this year’s Tramlines Festival in Sheffield where they will be playing The Leadmill on Saturday on the same line up as the likes of Deap Vally, The Hot Soles and Neon Waltz. A very strong line up that could easily see you spending a huge chunk of Saturday at Tramlines in The Leadmill. Find out more here.
