Finally, months after reading awesome reviews and spying mouthwatering photos on Instagram, I got to go to Craft & Dough for pizza! It was a wait that was well worth it too as I was very impressed with the food and the extensive drinks menu on offer there.
Me and my boyfriend headed over to the Kelham Island Quarter on a Saturday afternoon for what turned out to be a lovely brunch. Getting there at around 12pm, the place was pretty quiet but then again for a Saturday 12pm is still quite early. As it was such a beautiful day, we decided to sit outside on the wooden benches that overlooked a small portion of the river and the beautifully recently redeveloped area of Sheffield.
At 12, the brunch menu was still on so we had the option of ordering from the normal or the brunch menu. I opted for pizza and fries from the usual menu and my boyfriend went for buttermilk pancakes with bacon and maple syrup off of the brunch menu. The food arrived pretty quickly and instantly I was impressed with how awesome and delicious the pizza looked. The Goats Cheese and Beetroot pizza was just as delicious as it looked as well, the fresh and seasonal ingredients used made for a pizza that was perfect for a summer afternoon. The dough itself was perfectly light and though it was a very big pizza I managed to polish it all off and not feel stuffed, just a satisfied full. The fries were cooked to perfection and were the right amount for two, I initially ordered them myself but ended up sharing with my boyfriend as it was definitely more of a two person portion.
My boyfriend’s meal looked lovely, he opted for the 4 pancake option [there is a 7 and 10 pancake option too] and it was just enough for him and as he said anymore and it would have been way too much. The buttermilk in the pancakes and the maple syrup he said worked well together at creating a nice sweetness that was set well against the salty bacon. At first his pancakes came out without bacon but once things were sorted, there was a good amount of slightly crispy bacon though I think my boyfriends only criticism would be that he would have wanted one more slice added onto the meal.
In terms of drinks I decided to sample something from the lovely sounding cocktail menu. All the cocktails sounded great and if it would have been later in the day I could easily have sampled a lot more of that menu. However I opted just for one, The English Mojito, the perfect cocktail for a hot summer’s day in England. As the name suggests this one is based on a Mojito but instead of white rum we have gin and instead of mint we have sage. It is a beautiful cocktail that works so well with the lemon juice and cucumber perfectly sitting against those other flavours. My boyfriend said it was a little dry for him but personally I loved it and I think it truly showcases traditional Britain in an alcoholic drink.
With an awesome brunch menu featuring a veggie breakfast, pancakes and eggs a number of ways as well as their normal menu featuring seasonal pizzas, sides, starters and awesome sounding desserts; there is definitely something for everyone on offer here. The drinks menu is the other highlight and as the Dough part of the restaurants name suggests pizza, the Craft is all about Craft Beer and there really is so much on offer, pages and pages of it in fact. For non-beer lovers, there is cider, wine, spirits and cocktails a plenty for you to try too.
I know that despite the couple of blips I will be back here because the food was so good, there is a lot more on that menu I want to try, the atmosphere and place itself are lovely and everything is very affordable with cocktails coming in at £5.50 and my very big pizza only ending up being £6.50, meaning our bill itself only just broke £20. The Kelham Island Quarter is a beautiful area of Sheffield now after so much redevelopment and even though it is still a work in progress in some areas, it is a brilliant place to head to for food, drinks, a relaxing evening or a lovely afternoon and Craft & Dough is just a brilliant part of all that.
