Today, I bring you a great pair who create some wonderful folk music, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker have been nominated twice at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards because of their storytelling songs that tell of love and loss all set against a plethora of well played instruments.
The above track, ‘Silverline’, starts off gently with gorgeous lilting strings and jumpy notes bouncing around the silence that is left in the song. The vocals are soft and almost fragile in their tenderness, it really opens up the emotion of this track as the lyrics truly resonate with you when delivered with Clarke’s delicate precision. Towards the end strings pick up pace slightly but the initial feeling of chords dancing around the track remains adding a lovely, happy edge to their sombre classic.
The duo met in 2009 and have since then forged their own path through traditional and folk music. This path has seen them gain those nominations alongside award wins [Isambard Folk Award, FATEA Award for Best Album and Female Vocalist of the Year], great critical acclaim for their album and a solid fan base. Clarke’s vocals have been described as a jewel that speaks to your heart while Walker’s musicial ability has been described as having its own flair providing the perfect setting for the lyrics and letting them take centre stage.
Their debut album ‘Fire and Fortune’ was released in 2013 via Navigator Records reaching number 1 on the Amazon folk chart as well as gaining plenty of radio airplay and some wonderful reviews. Brilliant reviews was what their latest release ‘Nothing Can Bring Back The Hour’ also garnered with The Telegraph saying it is; “a bold success” and The Guardian having this to say; “Clarke and Walker stand out due to their originality……impressive stuff”.
After such a whirlwind few years and on the back of a great release the pair will be hitting the road this March and will be stopping off in South Yorkshire with a date in Barnsley at The Civic on 28th March.
