After spending weeks watching and obsessing over how good The Honourable Woman is on BBC2 [if you’ve not watched it the iPlayer it now!] it was only a matter of time before a serious girl crush on Maggie Gyllenhaal occurred. She is such a brilliant actress and pulls off the pixie crop better than any other woman out there in my opinion. The whole TV series is a political thriller [my favourite type of show] and as well as being fascinated by the story and the settings and the beautifully shot show, I’ve been slightly obsessed with Gyllenhaal’s character’s fashion sense [I know, so typical of me]. As a business woman and political figure, she dresses smartly and appropriately whilst also remaining chic, timeless and at times sexy. If I was a business woman I would want to dress like her and her sunglasses in the show by the way are awesome!
So inspired by her style and her outfit for show 5 [sorry I couldn’t find a better picture] I decided to give her timeless style a shot using things from my own wardrobe. The base of the outfit was surprisingly easy to put together – oversized striped shirt and black bodycon skirt are two wardrobe staples that I’ve never put together before and I never would have thought to tuck it in to create a better silhouette. The coat is a new purchase which because of the heat is yet to be worn out but come chiller days this will be my coat of choice, for me it’s a timeless piece that will see me through many seasons, years and styles.
Although, Gyllenhall’s character is a business woman she still has fun with fashion through quirky accessories which is something I can fully get behind. This time I decided to add pops of colour from the silver shoes which work with the monochrome colour scheme but also don’t just blend in like a pair of black courts or brown brogues. The bag is the piece that makes this outfit for me, the pop of colour from the bright orange brings the whole thing to life with a bag which is very suitable for work, shopping, lunch etc. A simple chain and classic vintage style watch both in gold add nice accents without taking anything from the outfit or detracting from its simplicity.
I don’t work in an office but if I did I would wear this but I know this is an outfit I will wear on multiple occasions from shopping to the cinema, gigs to any future interviews I may land. It’s so simple and timeless in its execution that it really would whenever or wherever and just a simple change of accessories can take this from workwear appropriate to night time chic.
What do you think of this outfit and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s style? Do you watch The Honourable Woman?
