throwback tuesday #20

The Throwback Tuesday weekly post is a opportunity for me to revisit the good, cheesy, forgotten or essential parts of music, film, tv and books from my childhood, the past few years or the generations/eras/works of art that have influenced my life in some way.

As the World Cup is on currently, I thought for this week’s throwback post I’d take a look at some of the football/World Cup related songs of my childhood. Some are good, some are cheesy but they all showcase just how passionate every single English man and woman is about us winning [even though it’s not likely to happen] and even me, as a non-football fan, will gladly watch an England World Cup match and cheer on our boys. Good Luck England!

Baddiel and Skinner and The Lightning Seeds – Three Lions

Probably one of the better football themed songs, in many ways it’s a true anthem of World Cup season and still lives on well loved today.

Fat Les – Vindaloo

This one isn’t necessarily football themed in lyrics but was used as an unofficial World Cup song and has become synonymous with the World Cup. If ever there was a song to sum up the lad culture of the 90’s this is it.

New Order and Keith Allen feat. John Barnes – World in Motion

This one is a really good track and obviously features everyone’s favourite football song moment in the form of that rap by John Barnes.

Ant and Dec – We’re On The Ball

Ok, so this is cheesy and catchy as hell but this came out when I was 11 and quite football obsessed. During the football tournaments of that time this was played non-stop and I used to drive my dad crazy singing it all day and even now I still know the majority of the words, it made a lasting impression clearly and honestly it is quite a good pop song even despite the cheese.
