This week, I thought I’d share with you one of my new favourite bands and a discovery I made through seeing them support Thumpers in Sheffield a couple of weeks ago. The band are Cut Ribbons, a 5 piece alternative act from Llanelli in Wales. The female fronted act mix stunning and soaring vocals with rock tinged guitars and atmospheric synths sounds to create something utterly captivating and fresh to listen to.
Above is the single ‘Damascus’ taken from the EP of the same name. Starting with quick drums that build into a catchy indie rock track with guitar hooks and the boy/girl vocals that sees deeper tones mixed with soaring, sweet sounding moments. The choruses are where it all kicks on becoming bigger and the rock riffs fully come into their own. Meanwhile on ‘In The Rain’ high pitched synths bring us into crashing cymbals and yo-yoing electronics. Verses are much calmer just featuring the shiny sounds and flowing melodies before choruses of bigger vocals, a strong bass line and pounding drums.
So far, the band have released two singles ‘Damascus’ and ‘In The Rain’ both of which have been received very positively online and when played live. Doing things old school though with their record labels with the first single released on vinyl and the latter released on tape. Their track ‘Paper Shields’ has also been added to the BBC Introducing playlist, quite an impressive feat and we all know how many acts have gone from BBC Introducing festival stages and radio shows to huge big name acts and for me Cut Ribbons are sure to become another one of those success stories.
Having played festivals such as Reading and Leeds, SWN and Boardmasters already along with supporting the likes of Thumpers, The Joy Formidable and Dry The River, they are certainly getting their music out there for all to hear. With such a well put together live set already at such an early stage in their career, they are more than set for bigger and better things over the next year or so.
As I said earlier these guys are one of my new favourite acts, I love their sound and I absolutely love making discoveries of amazing bands like these especially when you discover them live as it really does give you a feel for their sound. These guys are definitely one to watch out for and you can check them out either online or I imagine on the road in a town or at a festival near you soon.
