23 years old Newcastle lad Samuel Thomas is one singer/songwriter you should definitely all have on your radars for 2014. With lyrics and style reminiscent of early days Kate Nash, Lily Allen and Jamie T mixed with a melodic sing-song storytelling vocal style similar to acts such as Chloe Howl, he has a sound people will surely like.
‘The Morning After’ is a very subdued track quietly creating a lovely melody of gentle acoustic guitar that sits under the wonderful vocal sound on offer here. The final chorus is when it all kicks with crashing cymbals, drum beats and quick guitar that still retains that melody of the earlier acoustic. It’s a wonderful song and one that shows some real potential and song-writing skill from Thomas.
Constantly updating his Soundcloud and YouTube channels and connecting with people via Twitter has completely opened him and his music up to a huge audience. Through his Soundcloud he has been compiling what can only be described as a brilliant array of covers entitled The Cover Sessions. This little playlist of tracks he’s re-recorded features the likes of ‘Sweet Nothing’ by Calvin Harris feat. Florence Welch and Labrinth feat. Emeli Sande’s chart topper ‘Beneath You’re Beautiful’.
And you can check out one of Samuel’s brilliant covers below. This one is ‘Trials of the Past by SBTRKT feat. Sampha:
