new music: kiwi

Alright so I’ve been blabbering on about how amazing this guy is for such a long time now that I thought it was about time I wrote a new music post about him. With tracks combining all of my favourite dance music sounds from house to techno, this guy is producing music I truly love. So without further ado here is a post fully dedicated to the artist whose tracks have been featured ridiculously heavily on all of my playlists recently.

Kiwi, real name Alex Warren, is a DJ and producer from South London. My first introduction to his sound was from the ‘Llama’ EP which was released through Deep Shit Records in July. The record label was set up by Jack Savidge of Friendly Fires and Edwin Congreave of Foals after creating a club night of the same name and then set up the label to release house music tracks through. The ‘Llama’ EP was the second release from the label and it was a brilliant one.

The main track I featured on this blog a while ago now describing it as; “A dirty bass line, synths straight from the 80’s and high pitched vocal sounds more likely to be found on 70’s disco diva anthems all create a wonderful dance track with a disco edge.” Remixes of the track which also feature on the EP come from Rory Phillips and Jack Savidge and there is a B Side ‘Jerboa’ which I said was; “Heavily tinged with the sound of Kraftwerk through the synth, it’s a much darker track through and through with deeper bass but with piano sounds threaded throughout it brings a nice bit of light to the shade.”

Since it’s release more and more music has appeared on his Soundcloud page, again it is all good and never boring or repetitive. Having taken his main influences of disco, funk and house he’s combined them together to create a sound that fits perfectly in 2013 but is still bathed with nostalgia and the sounds of times gone by. Having released music on Kitsune and Needwant and gaining support from the big names in dance music Andrew Weatherall, Daniel Avery and Erol Alkan to name a few, he’s been a busy guy working hard creating plenty of songs and DJing as much as possible all over the world as well as his monthly headline residency slot at Nest in Dalston where he plays four hour sets. All this has clearly paid off for him turning heads in the industry and gaining him attention online and in certain music publications including Clash Magazine.

The summer has seen him up his touring schedule yet again spending plenty of time in Europe, playing festival such as Field Day and his first appearance at Ibiza. A busy and successful 2013 so far for the DJ from South London and surely with the strength of the music he is constantly putting out it is only sure to get better and better for him. With plenty of DJ slots still to come around Europe and London for the rest of the year there will be plenty of opportunities for people to catch his sound.

For now though here is his latest 3 track EP, ‘The Guanako Haka’:
