As the festival season started over the weekend with The Great Escape in Brighton it seems we are in that time of year filled with music, sun but more likely rain, fields and what will become the festival anthems of 2013. From looks of bills the smaller festivals seem to be the ones that have really pulled it out of the bag music wise this year with some really good headliners and other acts scattered throughout their bills. This weekend sees the first of BBC’s televised festival with Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Derry so whether you are going to a festival in the UK or abroad or you are going to be festivalling it up from the comfort and warmth of your own home here is to a summer of music.
First big news of last week was that Franz Ferdinand are to release a new album this year. ‘Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action’ will be the Scottish quartet’s fourth album and the first one for four years. It is set to be released through Domino in August and after a few shows being played on festival bills over the past few months it’s nice to have the band back not only in the live arena but with a new album. As a big fan of this band back from when they first started I am definitely looking forward to their new album and hopefully a chance of getting to see them live if they announce a UK tour. Here is an album teaser video the band posted online last week:
Ty Segall is also set to release an album this year after releasing 3 last year. The new album is due for release in August and is titled ‘Sleeper’.
It was the Ivor Novello awards last week and as one of the more prestigious award ceremonies celebrating music of the past year it is always an important one for musicians. Big winners included Emeli Sande who picked up 2 awards for ‘Best Song’ and ‘Most Performed Work’, Alt-J collected another prize for their debut album an Ivor to add to their Mercury, The Maccabees picked up ‘Best Contemporary Song’ for ‘Pelican’ and Calvin Harris was titled ‘Songwriter of the Year’.
Speaking of Alt-J they debuted some new technology at one of their gigs last week which is supposed to stop fans from recording gigs on the mobiles. A new app called ‘Soundhalo’ is the apparent solution to people spending time on their phones filming songs with audio and visual recordings from that show being available for downloading straight after the band have put down their instruments and left the stage for the night. Many bands have spoken out about people recording their shows recently and it’s not surprising every time I go to a show you do see a fair few people spending their whole time recording the show and watching it through their tiny smart phone screen instead of watching the band that is playing in front of them in the flesh that they have paid money to see. In my opinion if you want to watch a band using a small screen then stay at home and YouTube their live videos most of which are terrible quality anyway but that is essentially what you are doing. Live gigs to me are the place where you can lose yourself in the music of your favourite band but there is no way you can do that if you are recording the whole thing. I think this is a really good solution and it should hopefully stop people filming gigs as the footage on this app will be professionally shot with good sound quality and all for a small price, let’s hope this is the way forward. Do you think this is a good idea or not?
Fatboy Slim has been announced as the third headliner for the 10th anniversary of Bestival this year. He’ll be joining Elton John and Snoop Dogg who have already been confirmed, his set is scheduled for the Friday night headliner slot. He was one of the headliners back when the festival first started so it will be a nice full circle for the festival 10 years later after a lot of success.
As Daft Punk release their brand new album ‘Random Access Memories’ today and see if they can beat Oasis’ record by selling over 650,000 albums this week. They already have the most amount of presales seen for any album on Amazon. Meanwhile, the first single to be taken from the album ‘Get Lucky’ has also been at number 1 in the UK charts for 4 weeks now.
