music for 2012.

It’s a new year which means new music, and for me especially, that is something I definitely what to embody this year. Don’t get me wrong I love the bands I listen to but I just feel that there is so much amazing music out there that I am completely oblivious to. Recently, I’ve started listening to a lot more dance and indie music, mainly from googling bands or artists namechecked by the likes of Friendly Fires and SBTRKT in interviews. It has opened my eyes to a whole new world of amazing stuff. So here is a little music related post looking at some of the stuff I’ve been listening to recently and things I’m looking forward to hearing this year.

In my attempt to refuse to let the CD ever die in favour of the download, I’ve been out buying more CD’s again. My room is packed full of CD’s yet I buy more because I hate downloading albums and I’d rather own a physical copy. I bought Miles Kane and Foster The People’s albums from HMV, two albums I’ve wanted for ages and are both amazing debut albums. I also bought the Bugged Out Present Suck My Deck CD that Friendly Fires mixed a few years ago. I got it off ebay and it was cheaper than downloading it off of iTunes. I haven’t listened to all of it yet but I’ve listened to a few tracks which are really good.

The rest of my Friendly Fires vinyl collection arrived a couple of weeks ago as well. Personally, I love them not just because it’s Friendly Fires but the design on the sleeves are great. At the moment, they are a bit like room decoration as I don’t have a record player but I’m going to put that one right soon as I’m looking for record player. My vinyl collection will be expanding soon as I’m looking for more to buy, a lot of limited edition vinyl was put out by some of my favourite bands last year so I’m going to try and hunt some of that down too.

Also, I’ve been listening to this SBTRKT mix today that was done for Rinse FM. The Friendly Fires fan twitter linked to it the other day and I thought I’d check it out and so far I’m 71 minutes into it and it’s really good. I’ve been listening to it while writing my dissertation and I’d like to think it’s helping ease the pain of the literature review a little bit so I recommend you give it a listen.

Finally, a few albums I’m looked forward to this year. There are some good ones due to be released and it seems like it should be a brilliant year for music yet again.

Enter Shikari – A Flash Flood of Colour
I have heard some of the songs from this last week on Zane Lowe’s show and they sound brilliant. The album came out on Monday and is number 1 now in the midweek charts. Enter Shikari always put out some amazing experimental music and they are not afraid to try something a bit different in terms of music and lyrics as they are not scared to shy away from the big subjects like politics which I really admire. I shall definitely be buying this album.

The Maccabees – Given to the Wild
This came out last week and did amazingly well in the charts. I haven’t bought it yet but I want to give it a listen, their new single is brilliant. I must admit I’ve never properly listened to The Maccabees but I plan on rectifying that as soon as possible.

Young Guns – Bones
Due to be released at the beginning of February and I for one am ridiculously excited for it. Young Guns are one of my favourites and they have been for years now. They are a great addition to the UK rock scene and the songs so far that have been released from the album sound even better than their first album which was one of the best debuts from a UK rock band in a long time. Definitely one of the albums and bands I’m most excited about this year for sure.

Also, not relating to albums but if you heard last night’s Download festival announcements on Radio 1 then you’ll know that the festival is set to be an amazing one this year. The Prodigy and Metallica [playing The Black Album in full] was already brilliant enough but now Chase and Status, Machine Head, Biffy Clyro and You Me At Six is even better. Also, very happy for You Me At Six for getting the second stage headline slot, I know a lot has been said that they are “not a Download band” and yeah maybe they aren’t because they aren’t super heavy, but you can’t deny they have the talent and backcatalogue to totally own that stage. The thing that annoys me at the moment is people’s attitudes to bands succeeding as well as their attitudes to festival bookers giving smaller bands a chance at playing big slots. Think about all the really big bands we have in the world, there are not many and as much as I love bands like Muse and Metallica headlining festivals, new bands need to be given a chance because what are we going to do when Muse and Metallica and the rest decide to call it a day. I’m glad Download have given the 2nd stage headline slot to You Me At Six, I think they deserve it and I think they will be amazing – I just wish I was going to Download to see it happen.
